Though a slow and involved activity, walking was preferred over other modes of transportation, precisely because of its pace and involvement. Rather than catching glimpses of random terrains vagues and interpreting from a distance their characteristics, walking allows a continuum, both in time and space, begins to form connections between places that would otherwise remain disconnected, allows for a landscape to be seen and a narrative to be encountered.
